As a kid, May 1 was all about running around the neighborhood leaving plastic cups of popcorn and M&M’s on door steps, ringing the doorbell, and running away before we were caught. It was especially important not to be caught by our cousins who lived a couple blocks away and to catch them. So after school one of us stood guard by the front door and the other by the back door waiting for the May Day Baskets to arrive.
I’ve heard that this is just a regional tradition. Maybe just an Iowa tradition? Anyway we’re keeping it alive!
But since I didn’t have any plastic cups (and didn’t plan ahead. at. all.) and we are only doing a few this year we made our own little baskets.
So Happy May Day! I hope yours is filled with stale popcorn and great childhood memories! And I really want to know: where are you from and did you do all this on May Day?
