Theologian R.C. Sproul has written children’s books. I had no idea until a friend of mine lent us The Donkey Who Carried a King a few weeks ago. And since it’s long over due I thought I should write a quick post before I return it. Things I love about this book:
- The story is told to encourage a little boy by his grandfather.
- The story of the donkey who carried Jesus into Bethlehem is fresh.
- The gospel is told clearly.
- The grandfather applies the gospel to the little boy’s discouragement that he is always picked last for the team.
- There are questions in the back of the book to help children understand the story and apply it to their lives.
- The detail in the illustrations.
The story is a little long and advanced for Miriam (2 1/2), but I would think in another year she would really enjoy it. It’s also a little strange that the font size changes throughout each page, that might be tricky for a young reader, but the story is well worth it.
R.C. Sproul has written a couple other books for children too: The Priest with Dirty Clothes and The Prince’s Poison Cup. You can see other books and music that I’ve found helpful on the Resources tab!
