Glimpses of Grace: Treasuring the Gospel in Your Home, a new book by Gloria Furman

From her opening story in Glimpses of Grace Gloria had me hooked. I’ve been there: scrubbing the cup with dried blueberry bits, exasperated, hoping to make someone feel guilty for not rinsing the cup the night before. But, really, I’m the one who stands guilty as I scrub that cup. I’m the one who can’t love without rudeness over something as trivial as an un-rinsed smoothie cup. I’m the one who is desperate to glimpse the grace of God. I’m the one who needs to treasure the gospel in my heart and in my home.

Gloria doesn’t bring up the story of the un-rinsed smoothie cup to condemn us. She does it because it is a window into grace. That’s what Glimpses of Grace is all about, seeing the opportunities in everyday life to cherish the gospel. Throughout the book Gloria holds in her hand this precious news and turns it slowly, noticing the way her stinky kitchen floor shows another facet of the diamond, and the candy stuffed in the couch cushion yet another.

Gloria’s focus isn’t so much about what it looks like to go about her day to day life changed by grace as it is to open our eyes to the opportunities we have to reflect on the gospel all the time. So, for example, chapter 6, “The Bread of Life and Bagels for Breakfast,” focuses on how our families’ demands for continuous meals show us our continuous need for our Savior. She tells us that we will be changed at the breakfast table when we have treasured the gospel, but the focus of the book is not showing us what it looks like to live by the power of God’s grace in the moment we don’t want to make breakfast, again, for our families.

The most powerful chapter comes near the end: Chapter 9, “God’s Abiding Presence in our Pain.” Here Gloria’s tone becomes more personal as she tells the story of her husband’s debilitating chronic pain. Though it has made her ordinary life difficult, her faith in the goodness and greatness of God shines brightly.

Gloria models the opportunity we have to meditate on the wonderful story of redemption through our most mundane moments in life. And the early morning discovery that your last coffee filter was used by a house guest becomes an opportunity for worship.
