The sluggard buries his hand in the dish
and will not even bring it back to his mouth.

- Proverbs 19:24

He’s hungry, the food’s prepared, he’s sitting at the table, spoon in the bowl, and it’s just too much to bring it back up for a bite. This verse makes me laugh because it’s just so ridiculous. And because it seems vaguely familiar from the days when Miriam was a newborn.

But this week, I’ve been thinking about being the sluggard with my Bible reading. For the last few weeks I’ve gotten out of bed, made a cup of coffee, sat down right next to my Bible, but have hardly opened it up. My hand is in the bowl. And it feels like work to read the words. And I’m tired.

I’ve been ridiculous. Some days it’s as simple as not being sure what to read next and my mind is too foggy to make any decisions like that before the girls are up. So I’m reading through the Bible again. Plodding along. And being reminded of God and his faithfulness.
