Psalm 37:1-3
37:1 Fret not yourself because of evildoers;
be not envious of wrongdoers!
These are two common and very different responses we can have when we hear about wicked people gaining power: we can become fearful or we can envy their power and ease.
37:2 For they will soon fade like the grass
and wither like the green herb.
The reason why neither response (fretting or envying) is good is because of the eternal perspective. They will not prosper in the end. You don’t need to fret that they will mess up God’s plan. Any light and momentary affliction they bring us can only achieve for us an eternal weight of glory.
37:3 Trust in the Lord
What do we do instead? We trust in the Lord. Trust that he will make everything right in the end. Trust that while things can make our lives uncomfortable and call for courage that nothing will thwart the advance of the Gospel or separate us from the love of God. Trust his promise that one day the meek will inherit the earth.
And do good.
There are all kinds of good works that he has prepared in advance for us to do. We need to be about these things. We must learn to do good. Offer hospitality. Suffer long and be kind to your children. Pray. Defend the fatherless. Make dinner.
