Many young women that I know would love an older godly woman to mentor them. At least in theory. But for us to really be mentored by older women the way God would have us be mentored, we must be open to change, to repentance, to growing in godliness. We must be willing to look at our faults and sins and shortcomings and ask for grace to live differently.
Ultimately, as Christian women we need to learn to live in a way that adorns the Gospel. Paul outlines what areas older women need to be helping young women grow in. He writes in Titus 2,
[Older women] are to teach what is good, and so train the young women to love their husbands and children, to be self-controlled, pure, working at home, kind, and submissive to their own husbands, that the word of God may not be reviled.

But Sarah Edwards lived in the early 1700′s, we might protest, I need someone who understands all the current issues I’m wrestling with! And we do. But we don’t just need that. We also need to learn from people who stand outside our age, outside the mistakes that are so common in our world that they can easily go undetected. As C.S. Lewis writes,
Every age has its own outlook. It is specially good at seeing certain truths and specially liable to make certain mistakes. We all, therefore, need the books that will correct the characteristic mistakes of our own period. And that means the old books.
I think you’ll be surprised at how instructive the life of Sarah Edwards is for us today. I think you’ll be blessed by the fresh look at womanhood from an age not plagued with the same errors that we trudge through each day.
