A few days ago Miriam was sitting in my lap waking up from a nap and I thought about telling her a story or a singing a song. But then I thought of something I had never done before: I told her my memory verses.
I didn’t whip out my 3×5 cards and grimace when I couldn’t remember which way the NIV says it and which way the ESV says it.
I just wanted her to hear how Mommy is encouraged by the sweet words. So I told her the verses I know well from Psalm 63. I said them the way I say them when I’m laying in bed at night by myself and I pray them back to God:
Oh God, you are my God.
Earnestly I seek you.
My soul thirsts for you, my body longs for you
In a dry and weary land where there is no water…
It was sweet time with her. She drank her milk. I invited her in. She didn’t see the hard work of memorizing, she just tasted the sweetness of her Mommy thinking God’s thoughts after him.
